What Is “Deceived” About?

After more than 20 years of studying Scripture and theology, I wrote this book to examine the traditions and practices we’ve inherited in the modern church. Many of the things we assume are “biblical” were actually added gradually over centuries, defended as tradition, and passed down as if they were gospel truth.

Deceived challenges Christians to ask uncomfortable questions:

  • Is everything we practice in church actually found in Scripture?
  • Where did our current traditions come from?
  • Have we confused cultural Christianity with biblical Christianity?
  • What would the early church think of how we “do church” today?

The book covers topics including why “Lucifer” isn’t actually Satan’s name (it’s a mistranslation), the biblical case for and against common worship practices, the history of paid clergy and church leadership structures, and how Satan’s most effective lies aren’t the obvious ones… they’re the ones that sound spiritual and feel right.

This isn’t about tearing down the church. I love the church, Christ’s bride. But love demands honesty, and honesty demands that we examine whether our traditions align with God’s Word.

Read Free Online:

Still not ready to purchase? I completely understand. That’s why I’m releasing one chapter for free on the first Sunday of every month, starting in February.

This gives you the opportunity to:

  1. Read the entire book over time without any cost
  2. Share specific chapters with friends who might be interested in particular topics
  3. Test whether the book’s approach resonates with you before committing to a purchase

I’ll send out a reminder the day the first chapter goes live to all of my social media channels (Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and Instagram).

Coming Soon: Audio and Community

Audible Edition: I’m working on the audio version for Audible (I needed to get the Kindle version out first). Once that’s available, you’ll be able to listen while commuting, working out, or doing chores around the house.

Podcast Version: Even better… there will be an audio version of each chapter released as a podcast. Each chapter will be its own episode with additional commentary from me before and after the chapter audio. I’ll share:

  • Behind-the-scenes context on why I wrote that chapter
  • Additional thoughts that didn’t make it into the book
  • Responses to common questions or objections
  • Application ideas for personal study or small groups

This podcast format will essentially give you a “director’s commentary” version of the book. I’m not sure if it’ll be an audio-only version or if it’ll be available on YouTube… what do you think?

Discord Community: I’m also making a Discord channel dedicated to the book to keep the conversation going. I’ve already had some great conversations with people who have started reading… challenging discussions, thoughtful pushback, and deeper dives into specific topics. But I’d really like there to be a centralized place where everyone can join in and contribute.

The Discord will include:

  • Chapter-by-chapter discussion channels
  • A place to ask questions or challenge me (and others)
  • Resources and additional reading recommendations
  • Prayer requests for those wrestling with difficult truths
  • A community of people committed to examining Scripture honestly

More details on the Discord launch coming soon!

Who This Book Is For

Deceived is for anyone who:

  • Has ever questioned church traditions but felt guilty for asking
  • Wants to understand what the Bible actually teaches vs. what we’ve been told
  • Is willing to have their assumptions challenged
  • Loves the church enough to want her to flourish in truth
  • Values Scripture over tradition

You don’t have to agree with every conclusion I reach. In fact, I hope you’ll read with your Bible open, testing everything I say against the Scriptures. Iron sharpens iron; and I’m not afraid of rigorous examination.

A Personal Note

Publishing this book has been both exhilarating and terrifying. Exhilarating because I finally get to share research and convictions I’ve been developing for over two decades. Terrifying because I know some of these ideas will be controversial, even offensive, to people I love and respect.

But here’s what I keep coming back to: Truth matters more than comfort. If I’m wrong about something in this book, I want to be corrected. If I’m right, then we need to have these conversations; even if they’re difficult.

Thank you for your support as we challenge assumptions and return to Scripture together.

Godspeed.
Lew
